How to Make Your Candles Last Longer: The Complete Candle Care Guide

You've found the perfect candle — the scent is dreamy, the vessel is beautiful, and you can't wait to light it. But are you getting the most out of every burn? With a little candle care know-how, you can extend the life of your candle, get a stronger scent throw, and keep it looking gorgeous from the first light to the last.

Here's everything you need to know about candle care, straight from us at Abundant Vibes Candles & Scents.

1. Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn

This is the single most important candle care habit you can build. Before lighting your candle — every single time — trim the wick to about ¼ inch (6mm). A long or mushroomed wick causes your candle to burn hotter and faster, produces excess soot, and can create an uneven melt pool.

Use a wick trimmer or small scissors to pinch off the charred tip before each use. You'll immediately notice a cleaner, brighter flame and a more even burn.

2. Let It Burn Long Enough on the First Light

The first burn is the most important burn. Candle wax has a "memory" — it will only melt as wide as it did the first time you lit it. If you extinguish your candle too soon, you'll create a tunnel that follows you for the life of the candle.

For most candles, allow 1 hour of burn time per inch of diameter. For a standard 3-inch candle, that means burning it for at least 3 hours on the first light. This ensures a full, even melt pool and maximizes your scent throw.

3. Don't Burn for More Than 4 Hours at a Time

As much as you love the scent, burning a candle for longer than 4 hours at a stretch can cause the wick to "mushroom" (develop a carbon buildup at the tip), overheat the vessel, and degrade the fragrance. Give your candle a rest, let it cool completely, trim the wick, and then relight.

4. Keep It Away from Drafts and Vents

Drafts from open windows, fans, or air conditioning vents cause your candle to burn unevenly, flicker excessively, and produce soot. Always burn your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from air currents. This also reduces the risk of the flame coming into contact with anything flammable.

5. Store Your Candles Properly

Heat, light, and humidity are a candle's enemies. Store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV rays can fade the color of the wax and degrade the fragrance over time. If your candle came with a lid, use it between burns to protect the wax and preserve the scent.

6. Know When to Stop Burning

Stop burning your candle when there's about ½ inch of wax remaining at the bottom. Burning below this level can cause the vessel to overheat, potentially cracking the glass or damaging the surface it's sitting on. At this point, you can repurpose the vessel — clean it out and use it as a planter, a pen holder, or a small storage jar.

Why Wax Type Matters for Candle Care

Not all candles are created equal, and the type of wax affects how your candle burns. Our candles are made with coconut apricot wax — a premium, clean-burning blend that's vegan, cruelty-free, and free from paraffin. This wax has a lower melt point than paraffin and soy, which means it burns cooler and more slowly, giving you a longer-lasting candle with an exceptional scent throw.
